Things that attract the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 4:30; "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

The Apostle Paul was clear and direct in his admonition to the Ephesians in not 'grieving the Holy Spirit. He also warned the Thessalonians, 'Quench not the Spirit'. We can conclude from these two warnings that as believers or churches, we run the risk of repelling or resisiting the Holy Spirit instead of attracting him. The word 'quench' in Greek means 'to extinguish', 'to put out', 'to muffle' or literally 'to pour water and douse the fire'. If you keep ignoring and overlook his leadings, there will come a time where you will be oblivious to him. Yet we need HIM - the Holy Spirit. According to Jesus, it was to the disciples advantage that he physically left them in order for the Holy Spirit to be in them(John 16:7). The Authorized version employs the word, 'expedient' and in Greek, it literally means 'profit'. Therefore Jesus was expressing to his disciples, 'It is to your profit that I go away. For I do not go the Holy Spirit cannot come to you.'

You see as a believer, you are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Paul emphasized this fact to the Roman believers three times in the space of a few verses,

Romans 8:9-11; "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."

The purpose of the indwelling of the Spirit is for the enabling of 'being led by the Spirit'. The moment that you are led by the Spirit, your Chrisitan life will become an adventure. Living life without the leading of the Spirit is to live your life being stuck in a maze. You are forever moving but you do not know the way out. There are born again believers today, who love the Lord and are on their way to heaven but their lives on the earth is a misery becasue they do not know the voice and the leadings of the Holy Spirit. I want to let you know that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of glory. He is the Spirit of victory. He is the spirit of breakthrough. He is the Spirit of miracles. Jesus did not do anything in this earth in his ministry without the enduement of the Holy Spirit. His whole life upon the earth, from the reality of the incarnation to the resurrection and ascension was achieved by the Holy Spirit.

  1. Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit - The incarnation - God becoming flesh is a reality because of the Holy Spirit (see Matthew 1:20)
  2. Jesus is empowered by the Holy Spirit  (see Matthew 3:16)
  3. Jesus is full and led by the Holy Spirit (see Matthew 4:1/Luke 4)
  4. Jesus preached and ministered by the Holy Spirit (see Luke 4:18)
  5. Jesus cast out devils by the Holy Spirit. His deliverance ministry is because of the Holy Spirit (see Matthew 12:28)
  6. Jesus healed by the Holy Spirit. His healing ministry is because of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 10:38)
  7. Jesus is resurrected by the Holy Spirit (see Romans 8:11)
  8. Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father by the Holy Spirit (see Ephesians 1:18-23)

From his conception to his ascension, Jesus need the Holy Spirit. Don't you think that you and I need the Holy Spirit? If the Messiah leaned so much on the Holy Spirit, then you and I need to lean on the Holy Spirit. Now that we have established our need for the Holy Spirit, how do we see his workings in our lives? I know as a born again believer, He indwells me. That's for sure! But how do I attract him in my life? What did Jesus know and do to have the Holy Spirit to be so prevalent and expressive in his life and ministry? Why was the Holy Spirit so visibly moving in the early church? What did Paul know that we do not know today?

Going back to our starting verse, 'Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God...' The antonym of 'grieve' is 'please'. Therefore if I can grieve the Holy Spirit then the opposite is that I can please him. Whenever you grieve a person, he or she withdraws. Now the Holy Spirit is a person  and he will not leave you, but he can withdraw his ACTIVE presence from your life as you keep ignoring him. Let me give you an example. Here is a married couple and they have an argument. They go to sleep in the same bed but they are withdrawn from each other. Why? Because of their argument. Grieving in Greek in 'Lupete' in  this verse impliying 'betrayal' as a spouse would feel after his or her partner whom they loved and opened themselves to, go with someone else. God, the Holy Spirit loves you and I dearly. More than I can ever fathom or imagine, he loves and is passionate about me! Why would I want to hurt him? Why would I jeopodize my fellowship with him? Au contraire, I want to please him. I want to attract him even more in my life. I will never forget as long as I live, the wisdom nugget that Dr Mike Murdock spoke many years ago, 'God does not go where he is tolerated but where he is celebrated.' If you want to attract the Holy Spirit then celebrate him and get to know him.  Now there are more but  allow me to give you three simple things that will attract the Holy Spirit in your life.

  • Be a lamb in nature. That means 'be humble'. The Holy Spirit is attracted to humility. God resists the proud but he gives grace to the humble. When John the Baptist was looking for the Messiah before he was revealed to him. He did not know that Jesus was the Incarnate Messiah, he saw him as his cousin. Look at how the apostle John unveils to us how the Baptist's eyes were opened to see the Messiah,

John 1:29-34; "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God."

You see, John the Baptist saw the dove coming upon the lamb of God. The dove came upon the lamb. He is the same today. You want the Dove to come on your life, then be a lamb in nature. That means, humble yourself before God. How do we do that? Humble yourself before his Word!

  • Walk in love constantly. The Holy Spirit is attrated to people who walks in love.Paul states to the Galatians, 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.'(Galatians 5:22) I am amazed at the Christian church who preaches love but practices hate. If a person leaves a church, all of a sudden they are no longer a brother but an enemy. All of a sudden that person is cursed. Now that person may have done something foolish or rebellious but nonetheless he is still a brother. Keep your heart clean towards people. Do not walk in bitterness, strife or anger. Let it go! See what Paul told the Ephesians, 'And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:30-32)

  • Walk by faith. The Holy Spirit is attracted to faith. He is the Spirit of faith. Jesus did his miracles and healings by the Holy Spirit and he told the receivers on many occasions, 'Your faith has made you whole.' Faith attracts the Holy Spirit. The moment you speak the Word in faith, He is ever ready to move like he was in Genesis when there was chaos and darkness upon the face of the deep. The moment Elohim said, 'Light be!' The Spirit of God moved and light was. You want to see the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Then walk by faith! (G.A)
